What are gear slings / bandoliers?
Rock climbing bandoliers are slings worn over the shoulder and chest, featuring multiple gear loops for quick access to climbing equipment such as carabiners and quickdraws. They offer convenience, distribute weight, and are adjustable for various body sizes and climbing situations. Bandoliers are popular for their versatility in different climbing scenarios, providing climbers with easy access to essential gear during ascents.
Useful situations for gear slings
1. Long trad routes where you encounter chimney or wide crack sections.
Quite often in these situation you will need to use yours hips and or back, actually practically any part of your body. A gear sling allows you to quickly and easily readjust your gear so it it not getting jammed between your body and the rock.
2. Fast alpine routes.
A gear sling will allow you to quickly hand over the 'rack' to your partner. This can add up to pretty big time savings after many pitches of climbing.
3. Storing your gear in your bag.
All your gear racked up on a gear sling (a normal sling will more than do the trick here because comfort while carrying is not really a factor) allows you to put it in and pull it out of a pack knowing you have all your gear.
