The number one auto locking belay device used by thousands of climbers worldwide.

Belay device with assisted braking for a broad range of single rope diameters (8.5 to 11 mm)

The GRIGRI is a belay device with assisted braking designed for belaying both in the gym and at the crag. Compact and lightweight, it can be used with single ropes from 8.5 to 11 mm. The assisted braking function makes belaying more convenient when holding a climber or catching a fall. The design of the handled camming mechanism enables exceptional descent control.

Description

Belay device with cam-assisted blocking, designed for the gym and crag:
- Feeding slack and catching falls are accomplished using standard belay techniques, always keeping a hand on the brake side of the rope
- Cam-assisted blocking for a more comfortable belay: when the climber falls or weights the rope, it tightens, making the cam pivot to pinch and block the rope
- Cam-assisted blocking offers leeway for the brake-side hand position, regardless of the angle between the climber side and brake side of the ropes
- Rope installation diagram engraved on both the inside and outside of the device
Comfortable and convenient when lowering:
- The ergonomic handle allows you to easily unblock the rope and lower someone
- Progressive control of rope feed provides a smooth and comfortable descent
- 3:1 mechanical advantage of the handled camming mechanism helps control rope feed on small-diameter ropes and requires less effort on the handle for large-diameter ropes
Intended for all users:
- Simple to use for belaying both lead and top-rope climbers
- Optimally balanced design: lightweight (175 g), compact, and durable
- Compatible with 8.5 to 11 mm dynamic single ropes and optimized for those 8.9 to 10.5 mm

Can I use the GriGri for access work?

The GRIGRI belay device was specifically designed for belaying a single person using rock climbing techniques.
The I’D and RIG descenders were specifically designed for work at height activities and are more suited to the needs of the job: work positioning, anti-panic function, ergonomics, product robustness...
The GRIGRI may thus be used to belay a single person using rock climbing techniques. But it is not the most suitable of our products for descending in a work-at-height situation, as it will wear quickly and has no locking function for hands-free work positioning.

What is the working load limit for a GriGri?

For descenders used in professional activities (such as the I’D), the working load limit is determined by the EN 12841 or EN 341 standard, according to usage.
The GRIGRI 2 is certified according to the EN 15151-1 sport standard, which does not specify a working load limit. However, it does specify a dynamic test with a test mass of 80 kg.

As a precaution when belaying a person with the device on the harness, for loads above 80 kg we recommend increased vigilance and special attention given to verifying the compatibility of the entire system, including the rope, device, and the user's level of experience. Lowering a climber weighing more than 80 kg can be tricky, especially with new or small-diameter ropes.
In this situation, we recommend adding friction: FREINO carabiner or another carabiner in vertaco mode, gloves...
Above 100 kg, Petzl has not done testing with the GRIGRI 2 and recommends the use of more suitable products such as the RIG, I'D or another system.
